Community Welfare

Small Enterprise Program

The people behind Hong Leong Group are at core entrepreneurs and we seek to propagate this same spirit of entrepreneurship to the community. By expanding our contribution to the community through our dealings with various charities on programs designed to help the underprivileged set up their own businesses.

This program was officially launched on 18 April 2008. It was tentatively started in 2007 with a pilot program with Nur Salam and the launch of their first single mother's program and PKIK a special needs organisation and in particular for the Employment Training Program.  We currently have projects with Shelter, MAC, PKIK, United Voice, Good Shepherd and Nur Salam and are exploring the expansion of this program to the rural areas of Malaysia.  Please refer to one of our Events organised for the participants, "Jan/Feb 09: Hong Leong Foundation nurtures budding entrepreneurs."

We hope in the future, we can expand the project to more beneficiaries and to pull it tighter operationally so that all our partner organisation and beneficiaries can all work together to a point where we can set up universal training, access to markets and be a large extended family where all members under Hong Leong Foundation Small Enterprise Program are able to learn from each other, discuss ideas with one another, swap best practices and support each other.

Community Welfare Program

RM1 milion is alloted annually for our Community Welfare Program. The allotments are made at the discretion of our nine regional managers through cash donations to various charities regionally. Categories of beneficiaries include orphans, seniors, the sick, the disabled and special needs.

Statistics: From 1992-2008, over RM10 million have been donated to various charities nationwide.

Capacity Building

It is our belief that corporate foundations, charities, NGOs and other groups and entities that have a common purpose should not be working in a vaccum and to be more effective we should join hands and work together for the common good. To this end the Foundation organises informal dialogue and networking occassions between all the skateholders and have for example arranged dialogues such as our Best Practices on Community Welfare - where we invited all the Foundation supported charities and other interested parties to talk about their experiences to network and form alliances to work together in the future and organized a working weekend to introduce relevant NGOs and charities to Dr. Nandini Azad and her work with Gender and Microfinance.  Further to this, the Foundation mentors six different NGO's on the theme of "Running your NGO like a corporate business" emphasising on the needs of accountability, transparency and good governance.
